Tour de Fat

Tour de Fat originated in Fort Collins and now takes place in 13 western cities. It is an annual bicycle parade that takes place on the first Saturday in September. In 2010, over 15,000 individuals participated in this event. I’m not sure if the record was broken, but I heard the parade was getting published in the Guinness Book of World Records for most individuals in a bike parade. Not only is it a parade, but it is a fund raising event, and overall celebration.

The purpose of the parade is to raise awareness and funds for sustainable living and alternative transportation. Everyone participating dresses up in wacky costumes, decorates their bikes, and drinks good beer (It is the creation of New Belgium Brewery.) When I say costumes, I feel that I need to let you know that these aren’t your average disguises purchased at the local party store. Some people spend all year conceptualizing and creating these pieces of “art.”

I’ve never participated in the actual parade, but I’ve been downtown while it was going on and it was an absolute party. The parade moves through the downtown area and passes through the brewery. At some point Old Town is completely transformed. You might look one way and see a group of superheroes crossing the street with a group of Smurfs, followed by the Energizer Bunny.

You never know what you’re going to see. People really get into the spirit of it. I think it could very well be Fort Collins' most popular annual event. Other cities have their own Tour de Fat, but Fort Collins is where you need to be if you want to see the best one. I would recommend this event to everyone. Even if you don’t want to ride a bike, at least check it out downtown. It’s pretty impressive.
