Hockey - Colorado Avalanche

by Sarah M.
(Acworth, GA, USA)

An Avalanche of Success
During Their Short Time in Denver

My favorite Denver, Colorado, sports team is the Avalanche. I’m not sure why I’m such a huge fan, because I live in Georgia. At the time I started getting into hockey, Atlanta did not have a team.

There weren’t quite as many games televised, but it seemed that I got to see the Avalanche more than some of the other teams. They were winning, and I just got behind them. That was when Patrick Roy, Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg and Adam Deadmarsh were playing. I just sort of fell in love.

It absolutely broke my heart when the Red Wings beat them in the Western Conference Finals in the 1996-1997 season. I literally cried, and I have despised the Red Wings ever since!

Of course I was on top of the world when they won the cup again in the 2000-2001 season. It was great to see Ray Bourque win the Cup. After the Thrashers came to Atlanta, I started keeping up with them more and with the Avalanche less. It's hard to keep up with those late West Coast games.

Now, my husband and I have NHL Center Ice, so it's easier for me to keep up with the Avs again. They're looking really good this year! They have a great group of young players. Matt Duchesne and Chris Stewart are exciting to watch. I love that Adam Foote is captain now, and I think that Milan Hejduk is one of the most underrated players in the NHL!

I think the Avs might just sneak in and win another Stanley Cup this year. I can't wait until I retire, move to Colorado, and actually get to go to some games in person.
