Great Sand Dunes Colorado
Great Sand Dunes is An UnderstatementMy wife and I recently took a trip to the Great Sand Dunes National Park in south-central Colorado. We had driven south to climb Crestone Peak in the Sangre de Cristo mountain range, but unfortunately we could not climb as a result of the weather. Our hopes were dimmed, but we weren’t going to let it ruin the trip.
We decided to drive over to the dunes and it was worth the trip, because they are fantastic! Upon arriving, we immediately felt that we had been transported to Egypt or Morocco. The golden mountains of sand stood out starkly in the sunlight. The shear size of the dunes is unimaginable until one actually walks up and into them.
We climbed up as far as we could go and were rewarded with a view of the entire park as well as the surrounding mountains. We came back and set up camp within the National Park. A convenient shop that sold food and firewood was just around the corner.
We dried out our wet clothing from the previous day and relaxed while looking out at the sand dunes. Though we weren’t able to climb Crestone Peak as we had intended, the magic of the Great Sand Dunes National Park did much to relieve our stress and make us consider how very small we really are. The evening was capped off by an unbelievable sunset that turned the dunes every color imaginable. The Great Sand Dunes are truly a unique American treasure that no citizen should go without experiencing.
