Nature at its FinestColorado Springs, ColoradoWhen visiting Colorado Springs, one must stop at the Garden of the Gods. This 3,300 acre park is free to all visitors. The land was donated to the city of Colorado Springs by the children of Charles Perkins in 1909.
The park has one of the most beautiful rock formations within the United States. Many people believe that the Grand Canyon in Arizona, the Wiamea Canyon in Kauai, Hawaii, and the Garden of the Gods, in Colorado Springs are the most beautiful natural geological areas in the U.S.
There are many things to do at the Garden of the Gods. One can hike the many beautiful trails, mountain bike endless roads, walk and admire the different rock specimens. Also rock climbing is permitted within the park, as long as you have proper safety gear. A permit is required for all rock climbers, and all climbers need a buddy to ensure if an accident takes place, another person can call for help.
The geological beds of the park contain thousands of rock specimens. One can see rocks that are blue, red, white, purple and yellow. One can also see Pike’s Peak from the park. One will marvel at the various rock formations. One can wonder how long it took nature to carve out these areas to make it as peaceful and scenic.
There is a visitor center at the park as well. The center focuses on local Indians that inhabited the area in the 1700 and 1800’s. The park also shows off their photographic exhibits of the park’s finest features. Geologists often give lectures to visitors about the Garden of the Gods as well.
