Fort Collins Music

Popular Venues

by Leslie Coleman

Fort Collins, and Colorado in general, is known for its music scene. Whether you're looking to catch your favorite big name band or just an open mic night, Fort Collins is your place. The Scene Magazine is a local monthly publication that should be your go-to source for finding information about Fort Collins music. It also includes information about upcoming shows in Boulder, Denver, and other surrounding areas. This free paper can be found in various places around town.

The two largest venues are the Aggie Theater and Hodi’s Half Note. Both of these places are only open for shows at night. Other places, such as Avogadro’s Number and Road 34, also operate as a daytime bar and restaurant.Hodis Half Note Poster
Hodi’s Half Note is one of Fort Collins’ most lively music venues. Formerly known as the Starlight, this venue has completely revamped its style into a local hot spot for music of all genres. It’s located on the southwest corner of College Avenue and Laporte Avenue.

Every Monday at Hodi’s is Mugnight/Open Funk Jam. This is a free show in which $2 micro beers and $1 PBRs are offered. (You just need to purchase a $5 mug or remember to bring yours from home.) This is by far my favorite spot for Fort Collins music. It’s big enough to get popular artists, but still small enough to have an intimate feel with both the band and the audience.Head for the Hills Poster

The Aggie Theater is also located on College Avenue, about a block or two from Hodi’s. This is where you would catch the artists that draw in a larger crowd. Recently, Head for the Hills, a local favorite, and Insane Clown Posse played some shows at this venue.

The Aggie was the first venue I went to after moving to Colorado, five years ago. It continues to be one of the regular places that I visit. There are many artists that perform every year at this spot, including Toots and the Maytals. Drinks are quite pricey in this venue, but you’re in a prime location to visit nearby bars.

Avogadros Number is a great place for those looking for food, drinks, or live music. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day of the week. They are most known for their “Tempeh Tuesdays.” This is when the vegetarian burger is offered at a 2 for 1 price. The actual building consists of several different parts: the restaurant/dining room, front patio, bar, stage room, and a large back patio for outdoor music. No matter what the weather is like, the show will always go on at Avo’s. There is swing dancing every Monday, Open Mic every Tuesday, and each Wednesday is Bluegrass Jam. Avo’s is located off Mason Street, just north of Laurel Street.

Road 34 definitely has a unique concept - a restaurant and bicycle shop. It’s located near the Colorado State University campus, on West Elizabeth Street. Here you can have some lunch and a local brew while your bike is being serviced. Live music is only scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights, but it’s still quite a popular place. Rock, punk, and indie artists are the acts that frequent this venue.

Those are some of my favorite venues for Fort Collins music. I'll be adding more.
