Fort Collins Colorado
by Leslie ColemanFort Collins Colorado, a city nestled along the Colorado Front Range, is home to more than 136,000 people and Colorado State University. Each year Fort Collins enjoys around 300 days of sunshine, which allows for an enjoyable climate, even during the winter months. Many different kinds of people are attracted to this city because there seems to be something here for everyone. Many are drawn to the small town attitude while still getting the amenities of a large city. The close proximity to the Rocky Mountains, including the ski resorts, is also a common reason for people to come to this city. In 2006, Fort Collins Colorado was named Money Magazine’s Best Place to Live, and it made the #2 spot on the list in 2008.
The most iconic section of Fort Collins is what is known as ‘Old Town.’ This is the downtown area located on the northern side of the city. At Old Town Fort Collins you will see Victorian style homes, unique shops, pubs, restaurants, and even governmental offices. Old Town has such a strong visual appeal that Disneyland’s Main Street USA was modeled after it. Many people come here to spend the day window shopping, dining, and just enjoying the weather. Fort Collins has one of the highest concentrations of restaurants per capita in the nation. With this large selection comes the difficult task of choosing where to eat. It really just depends on what you’re in the mood for. There are many places that can accommodate a college student’s budget, such as College Café, and many choices for those who are looking for a fine dining experience, like the Canyon Chop House. Fort Collins has a lot of open land that has been preserved for outdoor activities, like as hiking and bicycling. There are currently 29 miles of recreational trails, 44 neighborhood parks, and 6 community parks. Some of the park amenities are dog parks, disk golf courses, and skate parks that are free to the public. Horsetooth Reservoir is on the west side of the city and can be enjoyed by boaters, fishermen, and swimmers during the warmer months. Horsetooth Rock, a rock formation that resembles a horse’s tooth, is something that every resident can identify. This rock is such an integral part of the town that it has been incorporated into the city’s logo. Fort Collins Colorado is in an ideal location for an out-of-town mini-vacation. Driving just 50 miles south takes you to Denver, 50 miles southwest takes you to Boulder, and just 40 miles will get you to the Rocky Mountain National Park. Red Rocks Amphitheater, one of the country’s premier outdoor concert venues, is just an hour away. The ski resorts aren’t far either. Several, such as Winter Park, Copper Mountain, and Vail can be reached within two to three hours. Black Hawk, a historical mining town and most currently known for its many casinos, is only a three hour drive. Each of these could easily be made into a satisfying day trip or weekend getaway.
