Elk Sounds

The Elk Bugle

The elk sounds that people often hear are called elk bugles. The elk bugle is one of the most beautiful and odd noises that one could hear in nature. These primal calls fascinate the ears of all that are nearby.

Elk bugling is a call from the males during mating season (the elk rut) that generally occurs during September and October. The calls begin just before dusk and go on till dawn.

Each particular animal seems to have their own characteristic call; however, they often start with a deep rumbling roar and finish with a high-pitch shrill. Some sound like grinding metal while others sound like horns. Some elk calls, I would say, sound like carefully crafted woodwind instruments. They all have a smooth even flow, breathy grunts, or even a combination of the two. It could be easy to be frightened by the sounds if one was not aware of the presence of these vocal creatures.

If you’re curious as to where you can hear these magnificent natural sounds, then look no further than Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes Park, Colorado. Volunteers are even on hand during the early evening to offer guidance on interpreting the bugling.
