Denver Travel Tips

Some Denver travel tips that might make your trip a little easier.

I remember having no idea what I needed to pack for my move to Colorado. I thought I would be saying farewell to all my Alabama sandals and sundresses. Boy was I wrong. Colorado summer days can be extremely warm, reaching highs above 100. So be sure to bring shorts and light weight tops to keep you cool. I don’t wear pants at all during the summer months, except for those late in the season Red Rocks shows.

It gets a little chilly up there after the sun sets. Always bring a comfortable pair of hiking boots or tennis shoes in case you go out exploring. Layers are key in this desert climate. You may have a scalding hot day, and then a chilly night or even a downright frigid night if up in the high country.

A waterproof jacket is mandatory out here in the winter. Trust me-- it is hard to enjoy yourself in a wet coat. I like the jackets that have two pieces, the inner fleece type that can zip out from the waterproof/windproof outer layer. But please don’t be afraid of the winter temperatures. Many times I have worn a short-sleeves shirt with snow on the ground. With the beaming sun here in Denver and Fort Collins, the snow usually melts within a day or two. Wide brim hats and sunscreen are a good idea year round. Snow on the ground somehow makes people forget about the risk of sunburn.

Please remember to bring a swimsuit! Countless times I have forgotten mine when staying at a ski resort. Most of these places have indoor pools or hot tubs and nothing beats an outdoor hot tub with falling snow. Sunglasses are a necessity on a bright sunny day, especially those with snow everywhere. The white is absolutely blinding. I can’t say it enough, but always have a bottle of water with you when visiting Colorado. Dehydration can happen extremely fast in this climate, especially if you’re doing some sort of physical activity.

Be informed about altitude sickness. This could easily ruin an outing.

Your typical winter accessories-- scarves, gloves, and hats --are always a good idea to bring, even in the summer if you plan on going up into the mountains.

Most days out here are pretty comfortable, as long as the wind is calm. I think I’ve finally adjusted to the weather change after six years, but then again this is an overall mild climate.

Did you know? Denver is one of the ten safest cities in America.
