Denver Broncos - My First Football Love

by Luis
(Destrehan, Louisiana, USA)

My favorite Denver, Colorado, sports team has got to be the Denver Broncos. Even though I don't live in Colorado, the Broncos have always been one of my favorite teams, and the reason is because my first distinct memory of watching any football on TV that I can remember is the 1998 Superbowl, with the Broncos against the defending champions, the Green Bay Packers.

I remember how the Broncos were such underdogs, not only because they were a wildcard team and that John Elway never seemed to be able to win "the big one," but they were going against the NFL's MVP of that year, Brett Favre and his Packers. I remember Terelle Davis leading the charge to win the Superbowl, becoming the MVP, forever planting himself in my mind as one of the best running backs that I have ever seen play the game.

Then the next year, I remember them going again to the Super Bowl, with John Elway retiring afterwards and being able to go out on top. After Terelle Davis, Coach Mike Shannahan continued to churn out good running attacks every game because of his prolific zone-blocking scheme that he ran with the Broncos. What I mean is that no matter the level of talent or depth at the position he had, his running backs seemed to always play higher because of the zone blocking, and going in with OK players and coming out with a great running attack is something he was always able to do.

This is the signs of an incredible coach. Even now they have one of the best wide receivers in Brandon Marshall, who this season set the single game reception record with 21 in a game, beating another great wideout in Terrell Owens.

Even though this year did not go as planned with new quarterback Kyle Orton and safety Brian Dawkins, the Broncos came roaring out to a six game winning streak to start the season, showing just how challenging this team can be to beat when they are clicking on all cylinders, a good sign of things to come.
