Colorado State Capitol

The Colorado Capitol Building is situated exactly one mile above sea level. The 15th step is engraved "One Mile Above Sea Level." In 1969 a new survey was taken that determined the 18th step to be more precisely one mile above sea level. In a 2003 survey, the 13th step was observed to be exactly one mile above sea level.

All three steps are marked as being one mile above sea level. Whichever one you choose, you won't be too far off! Have your photo taken on one of the engraved steps for a good souvenir of the Mile High City. Built in the late 1800's, the capitol dome was originally plated with copper. But the copper didn't weather well and in 1908 the copper was replaced with 200 ounces of 24 karat gold. The gold has been redone three times - in 1949, 1980, and 1991.

The marble and granite you will see inside was mined from quarries in Colorado. The rose colored marble is very very rare and it was almost entirely used up in building the Capitol. The granite for the exterior of the building was also quarried in Colorado. Some people have found patterns in the rose marble that resemble famous people such as George Washington.

After being closed for five years, the dome is now open for tours. You will have a magnificent view up there! Reservations are required to tour the dome. You can make reservations here

Make reservations two weeks in advance. Tours are hourly from 9am-2pm. A maximum of thirty people is allowed per tour, and if you walk in without a reservation you can only take the tour if there are empty spaces. Dome tours are free.

Beneath the basement of the building is a maze of tunnels that connect the Capitol to other nearby governmental buildings. There is a legend that a watchman spent his life guarding the Capitol and living in the tunnel. He converted all of his money to silver dollars and hid the treasure in the tunnel. No one has ever found it.
