A Mets Fan's Special Connection
with the Colorado RockiesWhile I am, and always will be, a die hard New York Mets fan, my favorite professional Denver, Colorado team is the Colorado Rockies, a team that I have always had a close connection with. That is because my parents had season tickets to the Mets in the 1990s, and I was lucky enough to get to see the first ever regular season Rockies Game, and even though I was only 13 at the time, I will never forget that day.
It was a sunny, if slightly chilly day in April, at Shea Stadium, and Doc Gooden was on the mound for the Mets, and Eric Young was pitching for Colorado. This was, I think, the first time that I saw Dante Bichette playing as well, and he is a man that I would come to most strongly associate with the Rockies franchise.
While the Rockies lost that first game, they had heart, something any Met fan can respect. I even still have the inaugural game pennant and program, complete with the filled out scorecard that I so diligently worked on.
A few years later, in the late 1990s, I was lucky enough to catch a game at Coors Field while traveling with my parents for a convention. It is a truly beautiful stadium, and while I do not remember as much about that game as I do their first ever game, although I know that the Rockies did win against the Dodgers, I remember I had a great time, at a great ball park, in a great city.
