The Colorado Outdoors
Endless Options

With over 300 days of sunshine each year, there are endless options for enjoying the Colorado outdoors.

Skiing and snowboarding are popular winter activities, as well as snowshoeing and snowmobiling. Even if you're not into riding the slopes, a weekend getaway to a ski resort would be a fun trip. Who wouldn't love to sit by a roaring fire in a cozy room, watching the snow fall?

Each mountain town is unique with different shops, restaurants, and night time entertainment. Another great cold weather activity is visiting one of the many hot springs scattered throughout the state. Some are convinced that these natural hot springs possess healing properties, due to the high mineral content. Even if that's not true, these mineral springs will be sure to relax and sooth.

Most people who only know Colorado from its reputation think of winter sports, but truthfully there is just as much to do, if not more, during the warm weather when all the snow is gone.

Some of the more popular warm weather Colorado outdoors activities are whitewater rafting, biking, hiking, camping, rock climbing & bouldering, horseback riding, kayaking, canoeing, tubing, fishing, and golfing.

Once the snow begins to melt from the mountaintops then the rivers get a fast flow in a hurry. This is when you start to see the whitewater rafters and kayakers out and about. If you’re not an adrenaline junkie, then perhaps canoeing or tubing would be more your style. If you enjoy fishing, remember to bring your gear and try your hand at the variety of trout that swim in local rivers and streams.

Exploring the many mountain trails by foot or bike is another popular past time for Coloradoans and tourists. Some might think they’re not physically up to hike a trail, but there are paths for every skill level. It’s a good way to get out and actually see the natural beauty of Colorado at your own pace. Horseback riding is another option for enjoying a relaxing Colorado day.

Camping is a fun activity for any age, especially for those with families. You could rent an RV or a cabin, or straight up wing it in a tent. There’s all sorts of variations of “camping.”

Rock climbing and bouldering are great for those who love a challenge. Bouldering is a little different than rock climbing; the biggest difference is that no ropes or harnesses are used. Instead a padded mat is laid on the ground to protect from any falls. First-timers should go with a more experienced climber. It can get scary in a hurry for the novice!

If you're a golfer, the odds are in your favor that your game won't get rained out. Golf courses are as varied as the Colorado terrain and nature's beauty.

Have you familiar with shed hunting? While hunting dropped antlers is virtually unheard of in the densely forested areas of the Eastern United States, it is very popular outdoor activity in the west. While the skilled find the most antlers, even beginners often spot a recently drooped antler while looking across a wide open vista.

You could also take a visit to some of the Natural Areas that hold Colorado Fossils.

Those are just a few ideas for enjoying the Colorado outdoors.
