Canon City Colorado

Canon City Colorado, a two hour drive from Denver, attracts tourists from around the world. They come for the spectacular scenery, outdoor sports, and the history. Few cities of its size in the world can match what Canon City has to offer.

On our last visit to Canon City we bought tickets for the following day for the Royal Gorge Route Railroad soon after we arrived in town. Then we checked into motel and quickly unpacked our bags. We spent the rest of the day sightseeing on the outskirts of the city.

If you are happy as long as you are seeing breathtaking scenery, you will certainly not be disappointed. Take any of the roads near the Arkansas River late in the afternoon. Drive slowly and look to the sides of the road and you will see wildlife. We saw more deer than we could count and some elk. Other wildlife you could see on any given day are foxes, coyotes, bighorn sheep, turkeys, eagles, hawks, and maybe even a black bear or a mountain lion.

We pulled the road and walked along the Arkansas River in several different places. If you visit during any season other than winter, the flowers you will see along the river banks are very beautiful. The fishing is great; we passed the day of day with a fisherman who had caught several brown trout.

The next morning we again went sightseeing before our scheduled train ride. We found Skyline Drive, a one-way road that looked like it might get us to the top of a mountain overlooking the city. The road was one-way and very narrow. I wouldn't advise those driving motor homes to try this road. The speed limit is 15 miles an hour, for good reason. The road is straight down on both sides and very narrow. Once you get on the road there is no turning around. This road scares a lot of drivers (and passengers), but it's one of those things that most people are glad they've experienced. The views of Canon City Colorado and the surrounding area are very good from the top, so good you will probably want to stay awhile. In fact, the mountaintop is a great place for a picnic.

We still had more than an hour before our train departure, so we parked our car at the Royal Gorge train parking lot and walked back to the city center. Unfortunately, it was a Sunday morning and almost everything was closed; however, it was still enjoyable. The downtown area is listed on the National Historical Register because of its century old architecture.
