Boulder Music

The Fox Theatre, Boulder Theater, the Southern Sun Brewery, the Mountain Sun Brewery, and the Lazy Dog are popular Boulder music venues. Boulder Theater, 2032 14th Street, is where you can find the largest live music venue in Boulder. It has been in business since 1906. Its interior is one of the most impressive that I’ve ever seen, anywhere. The ceilings and walls are decorated with large scale murals and art-deco details throughout. It draws the big names, playing all types of music - everybody from Johnny Cash to Tori Amos.

The Fox, located on The Hill at 1135 13th Street, is another popular night spot in Boulder. It’s smaller than the Boulder Theater, but still holds about 500 people. I’ve been there several times and have enjoyed it each visit, except for the times when it seemed oversold. The last time I went was for Yonder Mountain String Band, a sold out show, and it felt comfortable. So I think that they may have stiffened up the rules regarding how many people to allow in each night.

Both the Southern Sun and the Mountain Sun are small breweries that have their own dining areas. The Southern Sun is located in South Boulder and is the largest of the two. Every Monday night a different band plays at the Southern Sun and every Sunday a band is at the Mountain Sun. I’ve seen a couple bands play at the South location, and I saw that these nights bring in a lot of people. It has been packed every time I’ve been, even just for lunch, and every dinner night required a wait time. Overall it’s a fun place to visit -- great food, beer, & service.

The Lazy Dog is a sports bar that often brings in local musicians. It is located downtown on Pearl Street. I’ve been in several times, but only once to see a band. It’s a pretty small area for a band to play, but tables and chairs were moved back to make more room. I plan on going back, but I will probably wait for a band that I want to see.
