Airshow in Akron, Colorado

You might be surprised to find out that the little town of Akron, Colorado (population 1,700) just 50 miles east of Denver is starting to become a recognized name on the air show circuit. For one weekend in mid-September there is an amazing air show at the municipal Akron Airport.
The show features radial engine airplanes, World War II fighters and even some civilian aircraft. The show is called the National Radial Engine Exhibition.
If that is not enough there is also a vintage car show held at the same time on the air airport grounds. The most recent show, I counted over fifty nicely restored cars on display. Everything from a model T's to muscle cars.
This mix of aircraft and autos makes for a very interesting day for anyone who is mechanically minded. You will really have a chance to talk to pilots and owners and inspect the vehicles. If that weren’t enough, there are also live demonstrations starting around 10:00am. This includes fly-bys a and even a World War II reenactment.
The event is extremely inexpensive – I remember admission for two was under 10 dollars. There are also food vendors that have some pretty decent barbecue and western style fast food available. There is plenty of seating available, but be sure to bring your own lawn chair so that you can sit right by the runway. If you're not local, be aware the weather in Colorado can be a bit unpredictable, so be sure to bring a jacket or maybe even an umbrella. But with any luck it'll be a sunny day and the skies will be filled with some of the most beautiful airplanes that have graced the Colorado skies.
