A Day at The Royal Gorge

by Sarah Miller
(Acworth, GA, USA)

My husband and I recently vacationed in Colorado Springs, CO. One of our favorite activities while there was the Royal Gorge in Canon City. We only spent about four hours there, but could have easily made it a full day.

The bridge over the gorge is, if I remember correctly, the 2nd highest suspension bridge in the world, and the view is unbelievable. You may either walk or drive the 1/4 mile bridge. We walked, and we could feel the wooden slats shaking as the cars drove by. So scary! The bridge is lined with all of the state flags, which was kind of neat. I especially enjoyed the "No Fishing From the Bridge" sign.

There is a tram that runs from one side of the bridge to the other. We decided to ride the tram. They stuff about 25-30 people into this red box that runs on a cable across the gorge. While waiting in line for the tram, I swear we saw the world's fattest squirrel begging for food from all the people in the line. We also rode the incline to the bottom of the gorge. The grade is so steep!

There are many shops and food choices scattered about the park. There are also special entertainers and informational lectures for people to enjoy. The Royal Gorge is also home to one of only three water clocks in the world. Even without all of the other attractions, a visit to the Royal Gorge would be worth it just for the view. It is unforgettable!

Royal Gorge
by: Bill

Yes, one could easily spend a day at the Royal Gorge. Another way to see it is to take the historic train from Canon City to Royal Gorge. The route follows the Arkansas River. The entire trip is scenic, and wildlife is common. It is also fun to watch the river rafters that are often very close to the train.
